The Brickworks site exploration

The Brickworks

This week we’re taking a look at a site with a historical twist. We’ve recently completed our latest round of works for a development within the greenbelt fringe of Sheffield called The Brickworks. This site is amicably named this, as it is a redevelopment of a brownfield site, which was formerly founded as a brick making factory. The site, also known as the Griff Fireclay Works dates back to 1834. The factory produced bricks and clay ceramics to the booming steel industry which Sheffield is famous for all around the world.

As of 2016, this site was acquired by Avant Homes and through a collaborative process between the developer and Sheffield City Council, our design proposals were granted planning permission.

The commenced re-development includes new homes the green belt site, located in Stannington. Situated 20 minutes’ drive from Sheffield and one mile from the Peak District. In design the scheme respects the rural surroundings and historical setting with its choice of materials but opts to forge its own identity in a contemporary building form being adopted.

The redeveloped site is to retain part of the chimney, respecting and maintaining a visible legacy of the former use. Layout design creates a structured space (named Griffs Square) is designed around this area including a ribbon of open space leading to landscape views.
